The New Zealand Herald named him Business Person of the Year for 1997; the year he became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Two universities - AUT and Massey, bestowed honorary doctorates on him in subsequent years.
In 1998, he was named the Deloitte–New Zealand Management magazine Executive of the Year
In 2006, he was awarded the Blake Medal on behalf of the Sir Peter Blake Trust in recognition of his leadership contributions to New Zealand.
In 2007, Tindall was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of services to business and the community in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
